Stromness Walk 2 or, A Blissful Walk From the Cliffs of Yesnaby to Stromness

Now, this Yesnaby Coastal Walk will, indeed, be blissful ... as long as the weather is good. There are a lot of rolling hills and impossibly, ridiculously beautiful scenery. I find this walk a good one for when I need some soulful time in solitude. It's absolutely stunning and feels so remote, yet it's still easily manageable in a day.

Hiking/Backpacking

You'll need to get a ride out to Yesnaby first (unless you're particularly ambitious). If you take a canine friend, PLEASE keep him on a leash. We know several people who have lost dogs over cliffs. Dogs just don't understand cliffs. We also know people who have been lost over cliffs. Don't be one of them. Stay well back from cliff edges, especially on windy days. (But you really shouldn't be up there on windy days.) Sorry to be so grim, but it's important. Watch out for nesting Great Skuas (bonxies) in the spring. They can be aggressive if you get too close to their nests. If a bird dives at you, just hold something above your head, which should attract their attention as a target. As always, good advice for walking anywhere in Orkney: coastal and hill walks are best not attempted on windy days and good foot gear and weather-proof clothing in layers are going to keep you comfortable in the often rapidly changing conditions.
