If you are not staying near Hilo/this area, combine your stop here with any stops in Hilo as it is not so far away. I ate at the farmers market in Hilo (the thai green papaya salad place - it has fresh (and looks clean) salad and spring rolls ( I think they are vegetarian). It's like a food truck. It is located with the other food trucks.

Akaka Falls state park is off Hwy 19 outside of Hilo. You have to go a little bit off Hwy 19 - up on hwy 220 to make your way to the park. Parking/entrance is $5 per vehicle/per family (wasn't quite sure about this) and they require you to show your payment before walking on the loop path to see the waterfall. This is a paved path with stairs. It should be fairly ok for most people but it is not wheelchair or walker accessible. This is near water and lots of plants, so spray yourself with bug spray etc. I got quite a few bites because I didn't . The waterfall was impressive but I enjoyed the plants more. There were even banana flowers which I'm sure I've not seen before.
